Filling the position left vacant by the departure of the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, and heralding Isuzu’s return to the body-on frame SUV segment since the Frontier well over two decades ago, the Thai-build MU-X will initially be available only with a single engine and gearbox option, with drive either going the rear or all four wheels.
Like the variant sold in Australia, local MU-X models will come powered by the familiar 3.0-litre D-TEQ turbodiesel mill used in KB, but unlike its Aussie sibling, produce 130 kW and 380 Nm as opposed to 430 Nm. What it does however get is the same six-speed automatic gearbox as standard, with four-wheel drive versions boasting low range and a rear diff-lock.
Offering seating for seven, the MU-X retains a number of interior touches from the TrailBlazer and KB, but with a more extensive array of standard equipment with the biggest being a new nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system taken from the UK-spec D-Max (KB).
Incorporating Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and satellite navigation, the freestanding unit also receives Bluetooth, a DVD player and a HDMI port with the in-car tech being rounded off by dual USB ports.
Additional standard items consists of projector bi-LED headlights with auto levelling, 18-inch alloy wheels, climate control with rear vents, leather seats, keyless entry/start, cruise control, electric driver’s chair with six-way adjustment and on the safety side, ABS with EBD and EBA, electronic stability control, traction control, Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control.
A five year / 120 000 km warranty and five year / 90 000 km service plan are included in the asking price of R568 000 for the two-wheel drive model, and the four-wheel drive’s R629 100 sticker.
