Initially limited to Japan only and serving as a step-up from the range of G Sport models offered until now, the addition of Toyota's Gazoo Racing division sees the line-up grow to three variants, with the inclusion of the new GR and GR Sport.
Slotting in below the GRMN, the base GR Sport line mainly adds a number of cosmetic tweaks and upgraded suspension, while the mid-range GR adds better brakes, a full suite of aerodynamic enhancements, sports exhaust, limited slip differential and model specific interior trim. A selection of GR parts will also be available from a dedicated store dubbed the GR Garage.
For now, the GR Sport designation will be reserved for the Vitz (Yaris), Prius PHV, Harrier (Lexus RX), Mark X, Voxy, Noah, Prius C and Prius V (known as the Aqua and Prius Alpha in Japan), and the GR for the Vitz and 86.
Aside from the upgrades already mentioned, the 86 GR will also come equipped with Sachs shock absorbers, a complete aero kit, upgraded brakes with six-piston calipers at the front and four at the rear, a Torsen limited slip differential, Ray's Engineering forged alloy wheels, smaller steering wheel and Recaro seats. No engine changes are however forecasted.
As stated, Toyota will, for now, only make the GR and GR Sport ranges available in Japan, with plans to expand to markets such as Europe and North America still to be confirmed.
