Described as an "Atlas" variant with a name still to be officially announced, the German automaker has however stated that the new model will be built alongside the Atlas and American-spec Passat at its Chattanooga Plant in Tennessee, and ride on the flexible MQB platform.

As shown in the drawing, the new model features front-end styling derived from the Atlas but with a distinctive coupe-like rear end in the same mould as the BMW X4 and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe. While Volkswagen has not divulged any powertrain details, the concept could well have the same engine line-up as the Atlas, which consists of a 175 kW 2.0-litre TSI and a 206 kW 3.6-litre VR6, both connected to an eight-speed Tiptronic gearbox.

Touted as being an SUV "designed and engineered for the American market", the five-seat Atlas, like the seven-seat variant which replaced the Touareg, is unlikely to made in right-hand drive or become available with a diesel engine, thus rendering it a no-no for South Africa.
