The German manufacturer said the recall would involve the replacement of each vehicle’s front passenger airbag because the inflator could crumble when the airbag is deployed.
Around 47 000 cars in South Africa will be affected and include the 3 Series produced from 1999 to 2006.
BMW SA has stated it is unaware of any injuries from the faulty system. The airbags, supplied by Takata, have seen more than 12 million vehicles recalled in the last 12 months.
