GEORGE NEWS - Youngsters are hard at work in preparation for the Eden Karoo Eskom Expo for Young Scientists. This year the regional competition will take place in the George Civic Centre on 2 and 3 August, with George Municipality sponsoring the hall.
The deadline for entries is 24 May. Learners can enter their innovative projects through their respective schools. The competition is open to learners from Grades 6 to 12.
Warming up for the event, learners from Knysna, George, Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn attended two workshops in January and April, with an educator's workshop held at Inkcubeko Youth and Science Centre in Thembalethu on 25 January. Learners were assisted in their choice of science categories and received individual help with their projects in progress.
To spice things up the regional director, Caroline Bredell, conducted an experiment using bubblegum. She demonstrated how the amount of sugar in bubblegum affects the size of the bubble. In so doing, Bredell showed that everyday household items could be used to do experiments to get not only learners, but also educators motivated in the field of science.
Last year judges from throughout the region (corporate and educators) made their expertise available to judge at the district and regional competitions.
