GEORGE NEWS - To be a world changer, you need to get out of your comfort zone. This was part of the message given to about 200 matric learners from different Southern Cape schools at the week-long Investec NMU George Campus winter school for Accounting Grade 12 last week.
The positive effect of the programme was apparent in the improvement in grades and attitude among the learners.
They were divided into groups and wrote a test at the beginning of the week and again at the end. The students could not believe the difference one week of intense tutorials and studying had made. They also had senior students from the university as their tutors, which helped them tremendously.
At the closing ceremony last Friday, school psychologist Gawie Raubenheimer spoke to the learners about rising above their own expectations.
He used the analogy of an eagle growing up with chickens, but always knowing that he had more within himself. Raubenheimer told them that at some stage they would have to make the tough choice between staying with the chickens, or using their wings to fly to new heights.
He said this would be their personal challenge with the upcoming exams: knowing how they excelled after one week, imagine what they could do if they applied what they were taught, every day, till the exams.
At the closing ceremony last Friday, school psychologist Gawie Raubenheimer spoke to the learners about rising above their own expectations.
Dr Takalani Ramukumba, representing the Business and Economic Sciences Faculty, encouraged the learners to use what they had learnt during the week and to continuously look for new ways to become a better person. "You have to be prepared to work hard, to be humble, to assist others and in so doing help change the world for the better, as our namesake, Nelson Mandela, had aspired to do."
