GEORGE NEWS - Repair and maintenance work on the popular Waterside Boardwalk in Wilderness has hit an unexpected snag after initially getting underway in November last year.
The boardwalk, which offers visitors a scenic and eco-friendly route along the Touw River, sustained damage over time due to repeated flooding and natural weathering.
According to Phokela Lebea, communications officer for the Garden Route National Park, the refurbishment project began on Tuesday, 11 November, and included the replacement of worn timber sections as well as the reinforcement of the structure’s framework.
However, on Thursday 19 March, Lebea confirmed that construction was recently brought to a temporary halt after one of the appointed service providers failed to deliver the required timber within the agreed timeframe, bringing progress to a standstill.
He explained that while labour contractors are still on site finishing work with available material, the timber supplier has yet to come on board.
SANParks has indicated that it is now in the process of appointing a new service provider to ensure that work can resume without further delays. Once this process has been finalised, maintenance and repairs on the boardwalk will continue.
“At this stage, a confirmed completion date can no longer be provided. Updated timelines will be communicated once a new contractor has been appointed,” said Lebea.
Visitors are urged to adhere to all safety signage and to make use of designated alternative routes within the park while repairs are underway.
According to a source familiar with the situation, the restart of the project could still take some time, with internal processes, red tape and administrative requirements potentially hindering the project.
