Update
GEORGE NEWS - Repair and maintenance work has started on the popular Waterside Boardwalk in the Wilderness section of the Garden Route National Park.
The boardwalk, which provides visitors with a scenic and eco-friendly way to explore the Touw River, has suffered damage over the past year due to repeated flooding and natural weathering.
According to SANParks Acting Head of Communications and Spokesperson, Reynolds Thakhuli, the refurbishment project, which started on Tuesday 11 November, includes the replacement of worn timber sections and the reinforcement of the boardwalk’s structural framework.
“This will enhance stability and ensure visitor safety. We are also using environmentally sustainable materials designed to withstand local weather conditions and reduce ecological impact,” he said.
Visitors are requested to follow all safety signage and make use of designated alternative routes within the park during the repairs.
Maintenance work is expected to be completed by 31 March 2026.
The Wilderness section remains open for day visitors and overnight guests, and all other trails and facilities continue to operate as normal.
Thakhuli thanked the public for their patience and continued support as SANParks works to restore one of Wilderness’s most loved attractions.
