GEORGE NEWS - The lineup of talks at the University of the Third Age for September starts on Thursday 5 September with astronomer Case Rijsdijk who will give a talk at the Anthropology Group about 'How the night sky influenced human development'. The meeting will start at 10:30.
On Friday 6 September, Dalena Wolmarans, owner of a sawmill and a trucking company in the Knysna industrial area, will speak on 'Chopping down an industry by the tallest trees'.
Wolmarans's connection with timber stems from her father, Adam Stander who was born in the Knysna forest in 1928. Refreshments will be at 10:00 and the talk will start at 10:30.
Jill and Mike Holland will recount their 'Journey through time discovering history in our own backyard' on Wednesday 11 September in Armchair Travel.
Traditionally, history has been taught in schools as a chronological list of kings and queens and a mixture of significant historical events, but 'history' is really the story of people coping with their environment and their circumstances, and in the process developing a more sophisticated civilisation. This talk promises to be very interesting and one not to be missed. It starts at 10:30.
On 25 September at the general meeting, Johan Viljoen will give a talk entitled 'I didn't know that: Naval customs and traditions'.
Naval customs and traditions are essential elements that bind sailors together, foster a sense of pride and identity, and contribute to professionalism and effectiveness. The talk will include and explain many naval terms, phrases and idioms. So, come along to this meeting and learn more about the Navy. Refreshments are available at 10:00 and the talk starts at 10:30.
The month's programme concludes on 30 September with another session of International Affairs led by Case Rijsdijk. This meeting starts at 14:00.
All meetings are at Emmaüs in Memoriam Street.
