GEORGE NEWS - A number of residents of Hawthorndene Road started asking questions when a large crowd of municipal workers arrived outside their homes on Wednesday 25 October and started digging up their road.
But they were soon relieved to learn that the road works were part of a practical training session sponsored by Much Asphalt (Pty) Ltd, in conjunction with the George Municipality's roads department, to demonstrate the correct application and compaction of asphalt products to ensure longer-lasting road repairs.
The workshop, which was conducted by John Onraet, an independent asphalt specialist practitioner, started with a three-hour lecture in the banquet hall, provided by George Municipality.
It was attended by 80 delegates from all the local Eden municipalities as well as SMMEs (small, medium and micro-enterprises) involved in road repairs.
The aim was to provide them with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to apply best practice procedures, highlighting the use of hot BTB (bitumen treated base) asphalt as a method of improving the durability of road repairs.
Each of the attendees received a handbook on completion of the workshop and will be given a certificate of attendance.
They ended with a visit to the Much Asphalt plant in Witfontein, where the delegates could meet and interact with the staff while light refreshments were served.
