GEORGE NEWS - The reason for the late payment of a group of state pensioners at the George Post Office last week was a delayed payment of the required funds from the Post Bank.
Anoosh Rooplal, one of the business rescue practitioners for the South African Post Office (Sapo), said all the grants for May and June were eventually paid. It was the people with Post Bank Mzansi cards who had not been able to receive their monies on their due dates.
"If the branch hears that money from the Post Bank is expected at a delayed time or day, they pass this message on to the customers in the queues."
He said post office branches are not paying pensions and disability with Gold Sassa cards any more.
"This contract was cancelled with the Post Bank and none of these payments have been made since April. Beneficiaries are therefore required to collect their Sassa grants from retailers, other banks and ATMs."
Only those beneficiaries who get paid through Post Bank Mzansi Cards can still collect from the Post Office.
"The availability and planning of monies is handled by Post Bank, so once the post office area manager has placed a requisition for monies for a specific branch, the Post Bank needs to deliver it.
"The Post Bank is therefore responsible for the timeous and correct amount of money delivery to the post office branches."
