GEORGE NEWS - A community project that started in Geelhoutboom has branched out to the primary school learners of Diepkloof Primêre Skool.
Lizelle Burger and a team of 36 knitting and crochet "angels" made sure the entire school of 212 children - as well as the headmaster - are wrapped in dark blue scarves for this coming winter.
Burger is thrilled with the support of the communities of Sinksabrug, as well as the greater George.
"There has been so much support from individuals all over town who either made donations, or started to knit and crochet for the project," said Burger.
"Last year we raffled a biltong hamper at an Outeniqua farming braai and were blessed to raise an amount of over R2 000 from the awesome Sinksabrug Community."
Die Biltong Fabriek and Needle Nook are two businesses that went out of their way to help realise the mission - to keep Diepkloof's children warm this winter.
According to Burger the project is currently in its third year: "The last two years our focus was on Geelhoutboom Primêre Skool. We knitted beanies, scarves and mittens. This year we reached out to another farm school. I was initially surprised by the number of children in these schools, but forever grateful for everybody's help - without the support of the donations, knitters and crochet ladies we would not have been able to pull this off!"
The scarves were handed over last Thursday, 18 May, on a cold and rainy day.
