GEORGE NEWS - The New Year’s Regatta of the George Lakes and Yacht Club (GLYC) is in full force as they enter the event's second day.
Every year, visitors from across the country flock to Island Lake in Wilderness to compete in this highlight on the sailing calendar. This year, the event coincides with the GP14 Class National Championships.
These boats are easily spotted when their colourful front sails or ‘spinnakers’ are hoisted.
The event started on Sunday, 29 December, and will end on Tuesday, 31 December.
The results of each day will be tallied, after which a winner will be announced.
Spectators are welcome and can follow the directions to the Yacht Club from the traffic circle (at Waves) at the entrance to Wilderness.
A sign board at the circle will point in the direction of the mountain. Drive straight past the old police station towards the yacht club at the end of the lake.

Today, 30 December, the action will start between 12:00 and 13:00 for the rest of the afternoon. "This is because the wind is best in the afternoons," said Maurits Lammers, a committee member of GLYC.
Tomorrow, 31 December, the sailors will start a bit earlier, at around 10:00 in the morning. According to Lammers, it is a spectacular sight to see all the yachts on the lake.
