GEORGE NEWS - Community members are invited to a public meeting on Wednesday 5 November at 18:00 at the George Museum to re-establish the Friends – or 'Ambassadors' – of the George Museum.
This initiative aims to unite individuals and organisations passionate about preserving local heritage and supporting the museum’s growth. The group, which will function as a subscriber organisation, will assist the museum through volunteer work, fundraising, and community outreach.
According to the Western Cape Museum Policy, museums play a vital role in protecting and celebrating heritage, fostering learning, stimulating creativity, and promoting social cohesion.
The George Museum’s Ambassadors will embody these goals by helping to preserve collections, support exhibitions, and strengthen the museum’s connection with the broader community.
"Similar to Friends of the Museum organisations elsewhere in South Africa, the group will provide both financial and practical assistance and have representation in the museum’s governing structures, in line with the Cultural Institutions Act (119 of 1998) and the National Heritage Resources Act (1999)," says Alewijn Dippenaar, a member of the team that is behind the initiative.
"Residents are encouraged to attend and take part in this renewed effort to promote heritage, learning, and civic pride in George."
By joining organisations such as the Ambassadors, members could receive invitations to special events, lectures and field trips, and some potentially discounted museum admission.
For more information or to share the invitation, contact the George Museum.
The meeting will be held at the George Museum.
Everyone with a passion for heritage and history is welcome to join this exciting revival of the museum’s Ambassadors," says Dippenaar.
