GEORGE NEWS - The residents of Tarentaal Road in Denver Park will have to ask their visitors to arrive one at a time, as recent yellow line markings along half the street have left virtually no spots for parking outside their homes.
The extended yellow lines were painted after the road was retarred, but the residents are unsure why only portions of the street received this treatment.
Some recall earlier complaints a few years ago about a church group parking in the street for long periods, as well as some people parking outside a swimming pool.
The George Municipality's communications officer, Debra Sauer, answered the newspaper's queries, saying Tarentaal Road is only about six metres wide, making parking in the roadway unsafe where formal bays are not demarcated.
"The concern arose because several vehicles were being parked in the roadway for extended periods, which obstructed the flow of traffic and caused inconvenience to other road users," says Sauer.
"Motorists who parked in this manner did so illegally, as the vehicles not only encroached into the drivable roadway, but also restricted sight distances for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. This creates a significant safety risk."
Sauer explained that the integrated zoning scheme requires all property-related parking to be provided on-site. The yellow lines are therefore intended to keep the road clear and ensure safe passage for all users.
