GEORGE NEWS – Nelson Mandela University (NMU) has expressed its deep sorrow following the tragic drowning of one of its students at Victoria Bay on Friday afternoon, 31 October.
Another student remains in critical condition.
In a statement issued by NMU Communications Manager Milisa Piko, the university confirmed the incident and extended its condolences to those affected.
“It is with deep sadness that Nelson Mandela University confirms a tragic drowning incident at Victoria Bay yesterday afternoon. One student has sadly passed away, while another has been transported to hospital and is in critical condition.
“The University, and in particular the George campus community, extends heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased student during this time of immense loss. Our thoughts and prayers are also with the student who remains in hospital, as well as their loved ones.
“The University will organise counselling and psychosocial support for affected students and staff and will continue to work closely with the authorities as more information becomes available,” said Piko.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies, emergency personnel were called to Victoria Bay at about 17:20 after two women went missing in the water.
“Both were later retrieved, but one was declared dead by paramedics on the scene. The other was transported by ambulance to a nearby medical facility, where her condition was described as serious at the time,” said Spies.
George police have opened an inquest docket following the incident.
It is believed that both women are students from NMU. The identity of the deceased will be released once her next of kin have been informed.
