GEORGE NEWS - The 41-year-old male driver of the white Volkswagen Polo that hit a free-roaming horse before first light this morning, suffered minor injuries and has already been discharged from the hospital.
This was confirmed this afternoon by Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies.
The accident happened on the N2 between the Thembalethu and Pacaltsdorp bridges.
The issue of livestock roaming freely through the streets of Pacaltsdorp, as well as along the N2, made headlines again this week in a front-page story in George Herald.
Recent incidents of motorists hitting horses - especially in the dark - are being raised as a pressing issue.
Three horses impounded
Earlier today, George law enforcement officers impounded three horses in Pacaltsdorp and addressed a complaint of stray cattle on the N2.
Municipal spokesperson Chantèl Edwards says the municipality notes with concern that during these operations, certain members of the public behaved in an abusive and threatening manner towards officials performing their lawful duties.
Donations for horse camps
Ward Councillor in Pacaltsdorp, Marchell Kleynhans, made a plea to the residents of Pacaltsdorp to keep their horses safe in camps.
“In Pacaltsdorp, our horses are part of our people, part of our story. But too often we see them in danger on the streets and we know, just one accident can cost a life.”
Kleynhans says there is a need for wire and poles to set up safe horse camps, and asks for donations of wire, poles and other necessities. “Every roll of wire, every pole, every edge helps keep a horse out of harm's way and gives our community pride that we care for our animals.”
To donate material, contact Clayton Jacobs on 083 607 1250 (WhatsApp) or 082 302 7563 (call).
