GEORGE NEWS - A fundraising campaign is under way to help save Nightwish, a beloved Wilderness horse currently battling fibrosarcoma, a form of cancer that requires urgent and ongoing treatment.
Described as “a beloved part of my soul” by her owner, Barbara Underwood, Nightwish’s initial treatments have shown encouraging results and a full recovery is possible.
She now needs more intensive and costly care to continue fighting the disease.
The challenge is that the cancer is deeper than was first thought. To save her and ensure the cancer doesn’t return, treatment ought not to stop now.
We have to move into a more aggressive phase of treatment to get to the cells deep underneath the skin,” says Underwood.
The campaign aims to raise R35 000 to fund her medical treatment and give her the best possible chance at recovery. This will cover the fourth chemo bead she recently received and the next few months of intensive treatment her vet is planning.
“Nightwish has been a part of my soul since the day she was born 15 years ago. I raised her from a foal, and for years, she was my guide, carrying my hopes, dreams and fears,” says Underwood.
To support the cause, a raffle, titled ‘Win a Beautiful Garden Experience’, has been launched, offering participants the chance to win a charming prize while contributing to Nightwish’s healing - a succulent hanging basket as well as tea and cake for two at Tea-Junction in Wilderness.
Raffle tickets are R50 per entry, and the draw will take place on Tuesday 7 July, a date that Underwood hopes will be the end of Nightwish’s chemotherapy treatment.
Send an email to [email protected] for more information if you would like to enter. If you would prefer to contribute directly, donations can also be made to the BackaBuddy campaign for Nightwish’s treatment.
“Every contribution, no matter how small, makes a difference. Every ticket brings Nightwish closer to healing,” says Underwood.
