GEORGE NEWS - After a string of comments on a Facebook post about the speeding camera near the reptile park on the N2 in Kraaibosch being seemingly faulty, George Municipality has shed some light on the issue.
According to municipal senior communications officer Ntobeko Mangqwengqwe, the traffic department confirmed that none of the speed cameras in George are faulty.
However, there is an issue with the flash of some of the cameras due to load-shedding.
"The flash and the camera are two separate components and after load-shedding, the flash reboots and therefore flashes until it is reset," he said.
"The flash does activate irregularly, however no pictures are taken. The matter is being addressed with the service provider to also investigate the possibility of the installation of a UPS.".
Mangqwengqwe said no ticket is issued unless the infringement has been proven valid.
"After camera images are downloaded, the process runs through an adjudication process where each image is verified based on zone, speed and vehicle model, to make 100% sure that it is a valid infringement of the law," he said.
Annual calibration is also done on each fixed and mobile camera. Calibration certificates are often requested for file purposes in court. If a case goes to court, the prosecutor will request an appointment certificate of the operator/officer, a certificate of training and a calibration certificate.
The fining process is as follows: after a 30-day period, the first notice is printed/posted, and 30 days afterwards notice before a summons is posted. The summons will thereafter be printed, and an authorised summons server or traffic officer will issue the summons.
