GEORGE NEWS - The Pacaltsdorp Riding Community's (PRC) horse sterilisation programme took another step forwards on Sunday afternoon, 31 August, when a team of volunteers, led by retired The People's Dispensary for Sick Animals' (PDSA) veterinarian, Dr Shirley Smith, administered contraceptive injections to local mares and young colts.
The project is an initiative of the PDSA.
This follows the successful gelding of 12 stallions earlier this year.
To help prevent further breeding, Smith and her two protégés, veterinary students Nelene Boltman and Aiden Armstrong, treated 20 mares and nine colts.
A follow-up injection is required in a month, and thereafter annually. Stallions need to receive their injection every six months after the second dose.
The initiative was co-ordinated by team leaders Kalma Hayes, Clayton Jacobs (PRC's chairperson), Verdi Alaart (PRC's vice chairperson) and Ruduwaan Cemmers, who organised 29 horses to be injected.
A dedicated stallion sterilisation day for the nine colts is also being planned.
The group has appealed for donations of wire rolls or poles to help improve fencing and ensure the horses remain safe on the land they are renting.
