GEORGE NEWS - The Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Programme is an international science and education programme that provides students and the public worldwide with the opportunity to participate in data collection and the scientific process.
It makes a meaningful contribution to our understanding of the Earth system and global environment.
George High School was invited by GLOBE to participate in their Biomes Project which was held at the foothills of the Outeniqua Mountains during September 2017.
"Because of our involvement in this project, two learners of our school, Bronwyn Apollis (grade 11) and Nikita Orange (grade 10), together with their teacher, Charles Orange, were chosen to participate in a scientific project that will be held in Killarney, Ireland from 1 – 6 July 2018", says Charles Orange, the acting deputy principal. He says the learners need to do research on waterborne diseases and the impact of climate change on these diseases in our country.
According to Orange, the research project will be presented by these two learners during their stay in Killarney.
Bronwyn Apollis says this will be an amazing opportunity for her. "Words cannot really describe how I feel because I am totally over the moon, happy, excited and honoured. Ireland, here I come!"
Nikita Orange said to her Ireland is an opportunity of a lifetime that she is so blessed to be a part.
"I’m excited to broaden my knowledge of what our environment actually is all about, and to meet new people. This will all open a lot of doors for me as I go into a career which I’m very grateful for. In simple terms I am ecstatic to be a part of this."
