GEORGE NEWS - Elbie Campher (59) from George took second place in the General Nursing category at the 2019 Nursing Service Excellence and Cecilia Makiwane Awards ceremony on 8 November. At the prestigious ceremony, 31 nurses were nominated and recognised by their peers.
"Being a nurse is gratifying. I enjoy my patients and the comfort it brings them to receive quality care," said Campher, who has 40 years of service in the nursing profession.
The senior enrolled nurse at George Regional Hospital's outpatient department said being a nurse was a childhood dream, and ever since enrolling into nursing college, she has been living her dream.
She started practising on her siblings as a child and believes this is where the foundation of genuine care was laid. Campher takes her job very seriously. "Going the extra mile to accommodate patients should not be seen as doing something exceptional. For me it is part of my job description," said Campher.
Campher goes beyond the call of duty by ensuring that the patients reach their destinations. She is selfless and prefers to work behind the scenes to make things happen without requiring any recognition.
For those patients who are unable to travel to the hospital, Campher visits them at home to provide wound care and to deliver medication. She is also an active fund raiser for Cansa and volunteers with community outreach programmes for the Cansa Relay for Life.
