GEORGE NEWS - The holiday season in George brought more than just festive cheer to the Garden Route - it brought a flurry of activity on the roads, as traffic authorities worked tirelessly to ensure everyone's safety on our roads.
From speeding cars to parking woes, the numbers paint a vivid picture of the season's highs and lows.
George municipality this week released the following traffic statistics for the period 1 December 2024 to 6 January.
Accidents and fatalities
A total of 28 vehicle accidents were attended to by joint traffic services over the holiday season. Of these, six involved injuries, and a pedestrian was tragically killed on the N2.
Enforcement actions
Traffic enforcement was in full swing, with 1 983 traffic notices issued during the period and 31 vehicles being impounded.
Speeding remained a significant concern, with speed cameras logging a staggering 44 751 cases in December 2024 and 15 999 cases in January 2025 - totalling 60 750 speeding fines - so it's best to keep an eye on your postbox.
A total of 4 508 583 vehicles were monitored via camera systems.
Parking violations and summonses also formed a key focus of enforcement as 85 parking tickets and 909 summonses were issued, totalling a whopping R1 118 400.
Drunk driving arrests
Surprisingly, only four people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
The holiday season brought high traffic volumes, enforcement activity, and unfortunate incidents on George's roads. Officials urge motorists to adhere to traffic laws, remain vigilant, and prioritise safety to help prevent accidents and fatalities.
