GEORGE NEWS - George Municipal Fire and Rescue Services are gearing up for the festive season, ensuring readiness to tackle potential fire hazards and be fully prepared for beach safety.
Divisional Commander Johan Brand at the George Fire Services said the municipality's fleet is well-equipped for all kinds of emergency situations.
Additional air support will be provided from the Denneoord Emergency Airbase, featuring helicopters, spotter planes, and fixed wing water bombers throughout the holiday period to assist in runaway mountain veld and bush fire situations.
Residents and visitors are urged to remain vigilant during the hot summer months to prevent unnecessary fires and report any uncontrolled fires immediately, particularly as emergency services may be stretched.
Fireworks are illegal due to fire risks. The public is reminded to only light fires in designated areas and to dispose of cigarette butts safely.
For emergencies, residents can contact George Fire at 044 801 6311 or the general emergency number at 044 801 6300 or TOLL-FREE Disaster Number at 087 152 9999.
Beach Safety Tips
Officials encourage beachgoers to cooperate for a safe experience. With rip currents causing the majority of rescues, visitors should swim parallel to shore if caught in one.
Always enter water feet first to avoid serious injuries and ensure that life jackets are worn by children on watercraft, as most boating-related fatalities result from drowning.
The emergency services also use drones to speak to people who get into trouble out at sea. In addition, drones get used to deliver inflatable devices and significantly enhance emergency response efforts, particularly when dealing with swimmers in distress.
