GEORGE NEWS - The city of George is mourning the loss of one of its longest-serving and most respected civil servants, traffic officer Thembekile Desha, who passed away on Friday morning, 27 June, at the age of 56.
Desha dedicated 32 years of his life to serving the people of George with pride, humility and integrity.
Having joined the municipality in August 1993, he became a well-known and trusted figure in the city, both among residents and his colleagues in the traffic department.
Over the decades, Desha earned a reputation for his professionalism and his commitment to road safety.
He worked closely with law enforcement partners, including the SAPS, provincial traffic and other municipal departments, always with the same quiet dedication that defined his career.
“The embodiment of public service, honourable, disciplined and compassionate,” Municipal Manager Godfrey Louw said in a tribute to Desha. He also extended his condolences to Desha’s family, friends and colleagues.
Chief Traffic Officer Janine Wells described Desha as a mentor and a role model. “He always had a smile, remained positive, and never got involved in negativity,” she said.
“He gave kind advice to those learners who had failed their driving tests and was always respectful, friendly, and preferred to speak Afrikaans. He was truly an old-school, dedicated officer - and he will be sorely missed.”
George Municipality extended its support to the Desha family and pledged to honour his legacy of service to the community.
