Families plead for release of Frik and Peter before Christmas

NATIONAL NEWS - The families of Frik Potgieter and Peter Huxham, two South Africans unjustly detained in Equatorial Guinea for 670 days, are making an emotional appeal to the government of Equatorial Guinea to release the men in time for Christmas.

Frik and Peter were arrested on 9 February 2023 and have endured over 22 months of imprisonment under dire conditions.

Their mental and physical health has significantly deteriorated, with both men suffering from chronic medical conditions, severe weight loss, and extreme psychological distress.

Prison authorities have had to call for urgent medical attention due to their declining health.

On 1 July the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention issued a formal opinion declaring the men’s arrest and continued detention arbitrary and unlawful, urging their immediate release.

Both the South African and British governments (Peter holds dual citizenship) have been working to secure their freedom, yet progress has been slow.

On 23 October, the South African Parliament unanimously adopted a motion reaffirming its commitment to human rights and international law, expressing support for the families, and calling on authorities to act urgently to bring Frik and Peter home.

“We are begging the government of Equatorial Guinea to show compassion and mercy in the true spirit of Christmas and to immediately release Frik and Peter. Our greatest concern is their health, which is deteriorating rapidly," said Francois Nigrini, spokesperson for the Huxham family.

"This long and isolating ordeal has cut them off from all family contact, deepening the suffering they endure. For our families, this separation has been a source of endless worry, sadness, and helplessness.

"Their release would mean the world to us, bringing hope and healing to lives that have been shattered.

"Nearly 700 days of their freedom have been stolen.

"It would be especially meaningful for them to begin rebuilding their lives during the Christmas season.”

Shaun Murphy, spokesperson for the Potgieter family said having their loved ones home for Christmas would be the greatest gift imaginable.

"Christmas is a time to come together in faith, celebrating hope, renewal, and forgiveness. Having Frik and Peter with us again would be an immense blessing, restoring our families and renewing our faith in the power of compassion and grace.

"We urge the South African and British governments to intensify their efforts and engage seriously with their counterparts in Equatorial Guinea to secure the men’s freedom.”

To raise the profile of this matter, and seek support, the families of Frik and Peter launched an online petition and social media profiles on Facebook, X and LinkedIn.
