GEORGE NEWS & VIDEO - Elderly Sassa clients were highly upset that they had to queue for over two hours outside the George Post Office on Monday 13 March during load-shedding.
They wanted to wait inside as it was a hot, sunny day. An official explained that it was against policy to open the doors for the public while the power is off.
When they were inside, some of the elderly requested that, should such a situation arise again in the future, they be shown some courtesy and be allowed to wait inside.
There was adequate space to accommodate the queue. Some of the clients in the queue were 80 years old.
Johan Kruger from the Post Office communications department responded to a query from George Herald:
"The George Post Office does not have a back-up generator and when there is load-shedding, the branch is in pitch darkness. It is not suitable for letting customers rest until the power is restored. When funds become available, the Post Office will consider using a generator during load-shedding."
