GEORGE NEWS - The University of the Third Age (U3A) opens their programme for 2025 on Friday 24 January with a talk presented by Allan Korsman entitled 'The world's first heart transplant'.
In 1996 Allan Korsman became a tourism guide and in 2008 he was invited to work at the Groote Schuur hospital, guiding international doctors and guests through 'The Heart of Cape Town' museum. This includes the history of the world's first successful heart transplant by Dr Christiaan Barnard on Louis Washkansky.
Fascinated by this history that changed the lives of the people involved, the hospital and the world on 3 December 1967, Allan Korsman has put together a presentation of this event. There will be tea at 10:00 and the talk will start at 10:30.
On Monday 27 January at 14:00, in International Affairs, Case Rijsdijk will bring some fascinating new topics to be discussed.
At the general meeting on Wednesday 29 January, Dr John Rogers will give an illustrated talk titled 'Earthquakes in Ceres and Tulbagh in September 1969 and in Türkiye and Syria in February 2023'.
Rogers will begin by recounting what causes earthquakes before reviewing those in Ceres/Tulbagh, with earwitness and eyewitness accounts, and Türkiye/Syria.
Rogers was a lecturer in Geology at the University of Cape Town. He retired in 2009 and is a founder member of the Western Cape Branch of the Geological Society of South Africa. He is currently serving on the geoheritage sub-committee of the society.
Tea is at 10:00 and the talk starts at 10:30.
