GEORGE NEWS - If your Checkers Sixty60 delivery was slightly delayed on Thursday 16 April, there might be a reason.
According to the Garden Route District's corporate communication commander, Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie, an integrated high-density operation was conducted in George involving multiple law enforcement agencies.
Several drivers of the delivery service were reportedly inspected to verify their legal documentation and immigration status.
The operation included the George Police, the Sea Border Unit, the Public Order Police, local traffic officials and the Department of Home Affairs, and focused on addressing undocumented persons in the area.
"The members arrested and detained 14 undocumented foreigners who will be processed by the Department of Home Affairs' immigration officials," says Pojie. They remain in custody.
Pojie said these operations form part of compliance checks of the broader enforcement effort.
Drunk drivers and drugs
In an unrelated incident on Tuesday, some officers arrested a suspected drug dealer at the Thembalethu on-ramp on the N2 towards Pacaltsdorp during a routine stop-and-check operation.
A white VW Polo was pulled over and searched, leading to the discovery of three bags of compressed dagga. The officers also seized R15 650 in cash, two cellphones, several SIM cards and some banking details.
The suspect, who faces charges of dealing in dagga, is believed to be able to assist the police in tracing a wider network operating in the Garden Route. He was also found to be undocumented.
He and the seized items were handed over to the Thembalethu Police for further investigation.
A minibus taxi driver was arrested near the Garden Route Mall on Sunday 19 April on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol after allegedly threatening a provincial traffic officer.
The driver reportedly made threats of harm against the officer, as well as the officer's relatives and property. He is expected to appear in court again on Wednesday 10 June.
This arrest forms part of a week of intensified enforcement by Provincial Traffic Services across the Western Cape.
