GEORGE NEWS - The fraud case against two officials of the Garden Route District Municipality and a service provider was discussed in a closed meeting* at yesterday's special council meeting.
The case was opened on 1 October and the employees have been suspended for the alleged payment of goods - premix and slurry bags - that the municipality did not receive. The date for the disciplinary hearing has been set for Tuesday 19 October.
According to the background information on the item, the officials are also under suspension for another matter. "These charges will also be added to their charge sheets," reads the agenda.
Municipal Manager Monde Stratu last week said the supplier has since paid back the money for the products and services that were not performed. The full outstanding amount (R450 731,52) was paid into the bank account of the municipality.
Regardless of the payback, the investigation still continues.
* Stratu requested that the meeting be closed to the public, since the implicated persons have not yet appeared in court and have not been charged yet.
