GEORGE NEWS - George Municipality joins the ranks of many companies which, in the post-Covid era, prefers to keep certain things digital.
About four years ago in July 2020, a decision was made to continue with council meetings on a digital platform for safety reasons. This is still their preferred method of conducting monthly meetings.
George Speaker Sean Snyman explains: "The current council chambers in George Municipality are insufficient to accommodate the growing number of councillors and staff in terms of safety standards.
"While there is a need for new council chambers, the estimated cost of over R45m raises concerns about justifying such expenditure when there are numerous other pressing priorities for the municipality.
"With the prospect of additional wards and council members in the future, the need for suitable and safe facilities becomes even more imperative. While there may be pressure to resume face-to-face meetings, it is essential to prioritise the well-being of staff, councillors, and visitors.
"Meanwhile, council meetings have been successfully transitioned to virtual platforms, ensuring continuity and efficiency in governance despite the challenges posed by the inadequate physical infrastructure.
"The municipality can proudly confirm that it still upholds transparency, accountability, and democratic processes while prioritising the safety and well-being of all involved. Our meetings are streamed live on the municipality's YouTube channel and are shared on various other social media platforms such as Facebook and X, thereby reaching a wider audience."
