GEORGE NEWS - There is a beacon of hope for vulnerable children in the Garden Route, which is operated from Denneoord. A place where displaced children can feel safe, supported and truly cared for.
Though small in size, Ruby Havens' impact is immense.
After operating largely under the radar, the haven and its supporters decided it was time to step into the spotlight. This is what inspired their fundraising initiative, the Chicken Run.
On Saturday 2 May, the organisation hosted its inaugural Chicken Run fundraiser and awareness event at The Apprentice on the R102 to the airport. The morning featured both 2.5km and 5km routes, drawing participants of all ages in support of the cause.
The event aimed to show the important work done by Ruby Havens, which provides a safe and nurturing home for children who have been abandoned, live with special needs, or come from difficult circumstances.
Many of the children in the centre's care are affected by challenges such as substance abuse, unstable family structures and economic inequality.
The centre currently operates a home accommodating six children, where they receive holistic care, including medical, emotional, educational and spiritual support. There are also plans to expand in the future.
Directors Jim and Lyn Moomey launched Ruby Havens in 2016 after receiving training in orphan care, with a vision to restore hope and stability in these young lives. Beyond providing homes, the organisation also works to support families and promote fostering and adoption within the community.
The funds raised from Saturday will go towards sustaining the home and ensuring continued care for the children.
"We feel incredibly blessed by the way the community came out to support our organisation. There were a few teary moments when we saw how many runners arrived, many of them dressed up and embracing the spirit of the day," said Lyn.
"People came together to have fun. Children playing, faces being painted - exactly as we had envisioned. We wanted to create a community event where everyone could simply enjoy themselves. The run itself was wonderful. It was a beautiful day, our sponsors were fantastic, and everything came together. We are deeply grateful to everyone who showed up to support and uplift Ruby Havens."
Readers are encouraged to get involved through volunteering, donations or by supporting future events.
