GEORGE NEWS - The fear of public speaking often causes distress to people who are obliged to stand up and address a large group, be it friends or strangers.
To help ease this distress, U3A George / Wilderness will host a workshop on the art of public speaking on Friday 13 March at Emmaüs. It will be presented by a team of eminent Toastmasters from Port Elizabeth, comprising team leader Glenis Whitehead (Distinguished Toastmaster) and four colleagues, who will illustrate some of the basic skills of public speaking.
At the end the audience will be asked to evaluate a model speech delivered by one of the team, using a list of pre-determined criteria to sum up the points made in the workshop.
Whitehead has been a prominent Toastmaster in the Eastern Cape for over 30 years and has served as president of the Algoa Toastmasters Club three times. She has also been the Division Governor of the Year for the whole of Southern Africa.
Whitehead ran a course for the Eastern Province Cricket Academy for several years and has coached personalities such as Mark Boucher, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Rusty Theron and Russell Domingo.
The team members are Tom Horne, Distinguished Toastmaster of the Year for Southern Africa; Marlene van Wyk, an experienced Toastmaster and workshop presenter; Angie Kivido, presently the president of the Garden Route Toastmasters Club, and Mimi Makapula, the president of the ACT (Always Comfortable Talking) Toastmasters Club.
Tea will be at 10:00 and the workshop will start promptly at 10:30. This is a first for U3A and it is hoped that many members and visitors will attend the event.
The usual fee of R5 for members and R10 for visitors will apply.
