Control your portion size
Portion control is a must, especially for diabetics, as the quantity of carbohydrates that is consumed will directly affect his or her blood glucose levels. Stay aware of how much carbohydrate you are consuming and be mindful of overeating or overindulging.
Fruits and vegetables
Aim to consume at least five portions of fresh fruit and vegetables daily. They are an excellent source of fibre and have a low GL.
Opt to have a fruit when you need to have a snack. Not only does fruit offer the advantages mentioned above, but fruit is also delicious and provides us with valuable nutrients which our bodies need for their optimum functioning.
Choose suitable starches
When selecting starches to include in your diet, be sure to choose the ones that are high in fibre (and have a low GI). You should avoid or limit your consumption of refined starches – these are the foods that have a high sugar and flour content such as cakes, biscuits, pastries, etc.
Whole-grains are a must!
Ensure that your diet contains one to two portions of whole-grains every day. This may include foods such as lentils, beans, peas, etc.
