GEORGE NEWS - University of the 3rd Age has an interesting line-up of events for October, all taking place at Emmaüs in Memorium Street.
In Armchair Travel on Wednesday 11 October, Martin Kellerman will talk about his "'Seven months in Kyrgyzstan" and will focus on the country, the people and the magnificent landscape of Kyrgyzstan, a country in Central Asia that few of us know about.
About 80% of the country is mountainous – it lies in the Tian Shan mountains that are 7 000m high in places. Kyrgyzstan is bordered by Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and China. Kellerman spent seven months in the country to help implement a World Bank project, and his wife Marie joined him for four of these. He experienced the winter months with -10ºC as well as the summer months with a sweltering heat of over 40ºC.
Kellerman is an engineer by profession. Initially working for the SABS for more than 25 years, he set up his own consultancy in later years. He worked for various international organisations evaluating the quality of infrastructure of about 35 developing countries. He retired in 2022 and lives with his wife Marie in George. This meeting starts at 10:30.
Photographing flowers
On Monday 16 October at 14:00, the Digiclub meeting will focus on flowers. People are welcome to attend a Digiclub meeting as a visitor at any time, at an entrance fee of R20 if they are not a member of the U3A. Members pay R10 per meeting. Those who are interested to be part of this vibrant and happy group of people, may contact Roza Barnes at rozabarnes@gmail.com for further information.
History of plastic surgery
On Friday 20 October, Dr Chetan Patel will talk about "The history and development of plastic surgery". He will cover the broad history of plastic surgery, a speciality that has roots as far as 5 000 years ago in the Sushrutha. Much of the contemporary history is traced back to the work of surgeons in the two world wars.
Patel is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon based at the George Surgical Centre. He specialises in dermatological surgery, hand surgery and oculoplastic surgery. To relax he likes to hike and trail run. Refreshments are at 10:00 and the talk will start at 10:30.
The recovery of the Mary Rose
On Wednesday 25 October, Fay Jones will talk about "'The recovery of the Mary Rose". This warship was built in Portsmouth for King Henry Vlll. It sank in 1545 and was recovered in 1981 with many artefacts still on board. A huge team of divers, scientists and archaeologists was involved in the raising of the Mary Rose and the project broke new ground in diving and conservation techniques.
Fay and Dave Jones are new U3A members who have been heavily involved in running the anthropology study group in the Knysna U3A. This promises to be a very interesting insight into the Mary Rose. So, come along and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and join the U3A for this talk that starts at 10:30.

On Monday 30 October at 14:00, Case Rijsdijk will lead another discussion on International Affairs.
