According to Mr Franklin Lewis, Senior Curriculum Planner of the WCED, the purpose of the day was to motivate and inspire Grade 12 learners in preparation for the final examinations.
"The WCED hopes that this initiative will assist to improve the learners' performance in the final National Senior Certificate examinations of 2012."
The day comprised of tutorial classes presented by subject specialists, Senior Curriculum Planners and Curriculum Advisers. In addition, a number of tertiary institutions showcased their courses, bursaries, financial assistance and information which will incentivise and inspire learners on their future options.
Seven secondary schools in the Eden and Central Karoo education district attended the open day: Pacaltsdorp, George High, Imizamo Yethu, Parkdene, Thembalethu, Fezekeli and Percy Mdala, where subjects such as Afrikaans Home Language, English First Additional Language, Mathematics, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Accounting, Geography and Business Studies were offered.
The majority of the 350 learners commented that the day was fruitful and that they are better prepared for the National Senior Certificate Examinations that will commence on Monday 22 October.
The Director of the Eden and Central Karoo Education District, Mrs Florence Rhoxo, principals and teachers present indicated that this type of intervention should be repeated in 2013.
