For a first time voter, Election Day can be a dauting experience.
Here are some very helpful information from the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to prepare you for tomorrow.
Who can vote?
Before you can vote you need to have registered at a voting station in your residential area. If you are uncertain about where you are registered, visit www.elections.org.za and click on the tab ‘Am I registered?’ You can also SMS your ID number to 32810.
Any South African citizen who has a valid ID document and is over the age of 18 can vote.
Where can I vote?
You have to vote at the voting station where you are registered.
What to do at the voting station?
- At the voting station present your green bar-coded South African ID book or a temporary identification certificate to the voting officer, without the above, voting will not be permitted.
- After you have been cleared to vote, your name is taken off the voters roll, your ID stamped and thumbnail inked.
- You are then given 3 ballot papers to cast your votes. 1 ballot paper for the ward candidate, 1 for the local council and 1 ballot paper for your district.
- Ensure that the IEC Official stamped the back of the ballots. A ballot without the stamp will be counted as a spoiled ballot.
- Casting your vote should be done with discretion; no one should influence your decision or force you to change it. Therefore, after you have voted, fold the ballot paper and place it in the ballot box.
Voting is very important because it’s your opportunity to be heard, so do not take this decision lightly. If you are not sure about political parties involved go to www.elections.org.za.
If you are still uncertain about voting procedures, speak to the presiding officer at your voting station.
