Dean Schewitz's grandmother Hilda's headstone was one of three that were pushed over.
The Star of David on a fourth grave was broken out.
Schewitz said that the Jewish community received a phone call on Friday afternoon from a Cape Town visitor who informed them that the headstones had been pushed over. "We have no idea who would do something like this.
An inspection into the rest of the cemetery revealed that in other areas headstones have also been vandalised."
Asked if he thought that this act could be in reaction to the current fighting in the Gaza Strip, Schewitz said he hoped not. "Unfortunately, the destruction of Jewish graves is fairly widespread in the South African country communities.
We check our cemetery once a week so we know when it happened."
The community will have to meet to discuss the incident. Last year the cemetery's heavy metal gates were stolen and the building that is used for funerals was ransacked. The matter has been reported to the police.
