GEORGE NEWS - After a short mid-year break, the University of the Third Age is once again back at Emmaüs to start its next programme of meetings.
On Friday 21 July, Jeremy and Sharon Witts-Hewinson will present a talk on Gamkaskloof, also known as "Die Hel".
This was home to an isolated community hidden deep in the mountain remoteness of the Swartberg that was re-discovered by a Boer commando patrol during the Anglo Boer War.
The talk will relate to Gamkaskloof, its past, untrue myths, encounters with the outside world and contemporary experiences.
Tea is at 10:00 and the talk starts at 10:30.
At their meeting on Monday 24 July, the Digiclub will look at what "S" stands for. You are welcome to attend a Digiclub meeting as a visitor at any time, at an entrance fee of R20 if you are not a member of the U3A. Members pay R10 per meeting.
The meeting starts at 14:00.
On Wednesday 26 July, the general meeting will start at 14:30 with tea at 14:00. Please note the change of time for this meeting. The visiting lecturer will be Elzette Schutte who will talk about 'The South African berry fruit industry'.
While the local berry industry might be small compared to other fruit industries in South Africa, the total annual exports currently exceed 20 000 tons.
Schutte is the operations manager of Berries ZA that was established in 2011 to represent and support the local berry industry. She will explain the intricacies of the international market as well as the research initiatives currently in progress.
On Monday 31 July, Case Rijsdijk will be back with another discussion session of International Affairs starting at 14:00.
