GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The Garden Route SPCA (GRSPCA) recently launched a new project which aims to not only enrich the lives of local pets, but also those of the community and the environment.
"Children come to us daily with their pets who are either in need of food, treatment against parasites like worms or ticks or other medical treatments they might require," says adoption officer Amber du Preez.
It was this daily need that sparked the idea for their latest project.
Each child who visits the GRSPCA with a pet in need, receives a token with a number.
"Their details are recorded and in exchange for pet food they have to bring us recyclable items from their communities. The more they bring, the more food for their pets they will get in return," says Du Preez.
The aim of the project is to develop and grow a sense of responsibility around pet ownership among the children and to educate them on pet care.
"This also helps us to monitor the animals and see how they are being treated at home. We are very excited about the project. This will not only benefit the animals, but also the environment," she said.
