GEORGE NEWS - Dr Rory Dower, retired general practitioner who had a long and fruitful career in George, passed away on Saturday 5 August at his home at the age of 82.
Dower was the leader of the general practitioners' group for many years and welcomed everyone, eager to guide new doctors arriving on the scene.
According to a former colleague of his, Dr Christine Dykman, he was a role model for her when she arrived in George.
"We worked together for 17 years from 2005. I learnt a lot from him. For most of the GPs in George he was someone to look up to and a good example. He will definitely be missed as he has impacted on so many people's lives."
Dower arrived in George with his wife Renée in 1965 when he joined the practice of Dr Piet Steyn. In 2005, when he was due to retire, he started a practice in partnership with Dykman. He worked until the age of 79.
While he was a member of the Round Table, Dower was involved in the establishment of the George Service Clubs Utility Company (GSCUC) that developed the RLR and Murray House retirement facilities and Lyttelton frail care centre. He served on the board from 1968 and became chairman in 1980.
He was the medical officer for the Harry Comay TB Hospital for 35 years and also served at the sickbay of the SA National Defence Force up until his retirement.
Dower was instrumental in the development of Geneva Clinic, which started off with a four-bed ward, an operating theatre and small reception area on the corner of Victoria and York streets.
His family said that they have lost a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and a man respected and admired as a doctor and friend. He will be remembered with gratitude and love.
Dower leaves behind his wife Renée, children Brendan, Terry and Alex, and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the Presbyterian Church on Friday 25 August. The time will be announced in due course.
