GEORGE NEWS - The University of the Third Age (U3A) George/Wilderness is up and running again and welcomes visitors and members to the meetings in the Moths Shellhole hall in Rijk Tulbach Street.
Attendees are reminded to wear face masks when attending meetings.
On Wednesday 13 October in Armchair Travel, Mike and Jill Holland will continue "Exploring the Greek Peloponnese" with a look at some of the more modern aspects of that beautiful country. The meeting starts at 10:30.
In the Friday lecture on 22 October, Cassie van der Westhuizen will deliver a lecture on "The challenge we face!". This lecture will take a humorous, philosophical look at some facts and activities influenced by the human attitude to the environment that we live in, for example the arrogance, dismissiveness, and extreme belief in the capacity of nature to heal itself along with an unshakeable conviction that science will save the day, forgetting it is science that got us here in the first place.
Van der Westhuizen has a BA Hons degree in history, but her philosophical mind often looks at the anomalies that we encounter in our daily lives. Tea is at 10:00 and the lecture starts at 10:30.
On Monday 25 October, Case Rijsdijk will take another look at international affairs. This meeting will start at 14:00. In the general meeting on Wednesday 27 October, Allen Duff will talk about "Researching and writing narratives, with reference to recent book publications". These will be his two 2020 books, Boer War Narratives of the Cape Colony and The story of the Milkwood/Knysna Goldfield.
Duff has been chairman of the Outeniqua Historical Society in George for several years. After graduating from Rhodes University he spent 30 years in independent high schools teaching history.
His main interest is the Cape Colony in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This promises to be a very interesting lecture, so come along and enjoy a cup of tea at 10:00, with the lecture to follow at 10:30.
