GEORGE NEWS - Shocked PW Botha College learners and staff are mourning the death of fellow Grade 11 learner Abongile Bleki (17) who died on Friday 13 October.
Bleki, a member of the schools Representative Council of Learners (RCL), was attending a leadership camp with 34 fellow learners at the Eagles Falls Country Lodge between Uniondale and Oudtshoorn.
The learners, accompanied by four teachers, were resting after taking part in activities facilitated by Eagle Falls' instructors. Abongile's body was found in the rock pool on the premises in the late afternoon by fellow learners.
It is not clear as to what happened as he was amongst his peers who were relaxing in and around the pool.
Southern Cape Police Spokesperson, Capt. Malcolm Poje confirmed that the preliminary autopsy report indicates that he died due to drowning.
"Attempts to revive the learner was unsuccessful and he died on the scene. An inquest docket has been opened."
Millicent Merton, spokesperson for the WCED, said the learners immediately returned to George after the incident where counselling was provided.
Prosper Nopondwana, spokesperson for the family, says his parents are in a state of shock, but wish to thank the community and the church for their support.
"I want to thank the school and especially the headmaster Pieter Myburgh for the support and assistance afforded to the family during this traumatic time.
"Abongile was an active person who played different sports and never gave trouble."
Myburgh said Abongile was a natural leader and will be sorely missed.
"Not only by his family, but also by his greater school family.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Abongile's family and friends."
The school held a memorial service on Tuesday 17 October.
Nopondwana said Bleki will be buried in his hometown of Lady Frere in the Eastern Cape on Saturday 28 October.
