GEORGE NEWS - The man, Rodney Witbooi (33), who is charged with the brutal murder of his wife, Soneé (28), made his first appearance in the Geore Magistrate's Court earlier today, Friday 23 December. Witbooi was arrested on the scene.
The couple recently got married.
Witbooi is accused of brutally killing his wife with a panga at their home in Boekenhout Street, Loerie Park on Wednesday 21 December.
The murder follows an alleged altercation between the couple.
Witbooi opted for representation from Legal Aid SA and will be in court again on 12 January. He remains in custody.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Sgt Chris Spies, police responded to the incident at the house at about 02:00 and found the deceased with multiple wounds inside the home.
"It is alleged that the victim and a man had an argument and he assaulted her with a panga. She sustained multiple wounds and was declared dead by paramedics on scene," said Spies.
A second victim who intervened was also assaulted and sustained injuries as a result of the attack. She was taken to hospital for medical care.
Witbooi also faces a charge of attempted murder.
