GEORGE NEWS - The George Post Office was closed on Monday and Tuesday, 4 and 5 December following a burglary.
According to Louise Brugman, spokesperson for the joint business rescue practitioners of the SA Post Office (Sapo), burglars gained access to the building on Sunday and ground open the safe. An undisclosed amount of cash was stolen. She said their Western Region team did not receive any report that postal items were stolen and/or violated, as has been rumoured.
"The branch was closed for the two days due to the smell inside the office."
Brugman said Sapo's creditors today agreed to the proposed business rescue plan and an announcement of the rollout of the plan is imminent.
Part of the plan is the retrenchment of 6 000 of Sapo's 11 083 employees as a measure to restore it to solvency and sustainability without completely relying on government funding.
Sassa payments will also be phased out in a responsible way. Communications regarding this are to follow.
Brugman said when the plan is implemented, the security at all Post Office branches will hopefully be addressed. Only Gauteng branches currently have proper security.
"We are also looking to moving to a completely cashless system," she said.
