GEORGE NEWS - Four cattle were saved from a hellish trip and a possible cruel death on Tuesday 11 April after the Garden Route SPCA (GRSPCA) received a report of cattle being transported on the back of a bakkie.
GRSPCA inspectors Salomé Bruyns and Gerda Groenewald tended to the call and found the bakkie just before the start of the Outeniqua Pass exiting George. It was standing next to the road with a flat tyre. Local law enforcement officials were already on the scene and the traffic department was contacted.
With their assistance, the GRSPCA could bring the animals to safety.
"The bakkie was completely overloaded. The handbrake wasn't working and the tyres were worn. One of the cattle was lying down on the back of the vehicle and would have probably remained in that same position for the entire trip," said GRSPCA senior inspector Salomé Bruyns.
The driver of the bakkie was apparently transporting the animals to Van Wyksvlei in the Northern Cape, about six hours from George.
He received a warning and the cattle were safely taken to the GRSPCA.
The face says it all. This is not the way animals should be transported.
