GEORGE NEWS - The Cape Access Thusong Centre in Thembalethu recently presented a computer workshop to teachers and principals of crèches in George and Thembalethu. Victor Arries, the facilitator, says the e-skills workshop was aimed at Early Childhood Development (ECD).
Arries says this workshop is for anyone from a previously disadvantaged community in George who wants to better him or herself. It is also free of charge and anyone can apply. They believe it is never too early or too late to learn a new skill, especially computer skills.
"We want to teach grade R learners e-skills, but for that to happen we first need to train the teachers."
According to the Cape Access programme there is still a lack of access to computers, especially in rural areas. They believe children' social and economic development can benefit from knowledge and access to the internet, on a phone or a computer.
Cape Access has more than 36 e-centres that are mainly based in libraries, Thusong centres and schools. They offer basic computer skills like Word, spreadsheets, databases, presentations and such.
