GEORGE NEWS - The George family whose house was severely damaged in a fire on Monday morning has been greatly assisted by members of the community and do not need any more donations.
Wayne Byron (46) was at work in Wilderness when the fire broke out at his home in Laing Street, between 08:00 and 08:30.
His wife, Gaby (46), and their youngest son, Michael (12), were at home and the elder son, Alexander (15), was at school. He is a learner at Eden Technical High School.
According to the ward councillor of the area, Sean Snyman, immediate assistance was given to make sure the family had accommodation, food and toiletries. They are also insured and will be put up at Pine Lodge by the insurance company until the damage to the house has been repaired.
A resident of the area, who wishes to remain anonymous, told George Herald that when she arrived at the scene, the fire department had already doused the flames and the SPCA were there to collect the family pets. Snyman was also on the scene.
One of the bedrooms was completely destroyed while other areas of the house also sustained some damage.
“I offered them accommodation at my house as I have a granny flat where they could stay, " said the resident. "I put them up on Monday night, made sure they had a good meal and toiletries, and on Tuesday they had accommodation at a nearby hotel." A local fish and chips take-away restaurant also offered to assist with meals.
In the meantime, Wilderness resident Madelyn Köhler rallied the troops via an appeal for donations on WhatsApp.
“Thank you to everyone who jumped in to assist,” said Snyman. "I’m proud to be a part of an area that stands together and care for each other."
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
