GEORGE NEWS - Child Welfare George’s food store is depleted and the organisation is appealing to the public to help to make a difference as part of their Hope and Happiness Initiative.
This will help to take the nip out of the cold winter nights which in George last well into November, says co-ordinator, Karen Warneke.
"We are looking for tinned food, mielie meal, rice, dry beans, samp, oats porridge, sugar, peanut butter, boxed milk, stock cubes, packet soups and any other non-perishable foods. Also old clothing - especially for children. Blankets are also in scarce supply."
Travelling bookshop
Child Welfare has also started a travelling bookshop where they deliver toys and books each second week to the local community crèches that do not have these items. "We need any old books, puzzles, educational toys, etc. Heavy duty plastic and cellotape to co-ver the books are also needed.
"We are desperately looking for Afrikaans books as well please. Adult books are most welcome as we will be holding a book sale later on in the year," says Warneke.
Other items that will be welcome are old sports equipment, tennis rackets, balls, cricket bats and sports clothing, as well as any household items that are no longer used. "We will collect anything you no longer need - from furniture, curtains and linen to kitchen utensils.
"All and everything is welcomed.
"We hope to do some crafts with the children and for this we also require old CDs or computer discs. Please tidy your offices and pass these onto us," says Warneke.
George Child Welfare Hope and Happiness Initiative, would also like to challenge local business to do an office collection.
Sue du Toit, head of Child Welfare, says they thank the public in advance for supporting children and empowering adults of our community.
Items can be delivered to Karen at 2 Chip Close, Fancourt or directly to Child Welfare on the corner of Albert and Merriman Street. Marlene at Child Welfare’s office can be contacted to arrange collection of items if you are unable to deliver, phone number 044 874 0424.
