GEORGE NEWS - Georgians are once again invited to join another search for stranded chameleons in Blanco tonight, Tuesday 26 May, from 17:00, as part of the community-driven rescue efforts that have gained momentum across George.
Animal lover Donnatella Pontesilli, who has been leading nightly rescue operations since the weekend, described Monday night’s turnout as a “massive success”.
“Last night was a massive success! Around 80 chameleons saved - maybe more. Well over 100 people joined our search. It was an amazing experience for all,” she said.
The searches focus on green spaces and piles of storm debris where chameleons are believed to be trapped after recent severe weather caused widespread tree damage across the city.
Large heaps of branches and vegetation are currently being removed by George Municipality, prompting fears that many chameleons could end up at the municipal refuse site if not rescued in time.
Tonight’s search will take place in George Street, again under Pontesilli’s guidance. Volunteers have already spent several evenings combing through debris in areas, including Union Street and Blanco, with growing public participation each night.
Pontesilli said the initiative has become especially popular among families and children.
“Please parents encourage your kids to join our initiative tonight. They have such fun sharing kindness together and searching for them. The joy they experience saving our precious chameleons is priceless,” she said.
Rescued chameleons are being relocated to the Garden Route Botanical Garden.
To help sustain the rescue effort, Pontesilli is appealing for public donations towards the group’s “R10 each saved” initiative. Donations can be dropped off at the Yellowbird coffee shop or brought directly to tonight’s search site.
Pontesilli is also making a plea to community members to search their own neighbourhoods before storm debris is removed.
“Come help us tonight! You won’t regret it,” Pontesilli said.
